This is the voicemail message that people would hear when calling my home phone number for a couple of years when I was in high school. The idea of a teacher calling to talk to my mom and getting this voicemail message always cracked me up!

My mom and step-dad had been trying to set a new message on the answering machine when my brother decided to bust in and ruin their efforts with a notable quote from South Park. It was so funny and we all couldn’t stop laughing so my mom and step-dad decided to leave the message.

I wish I could hear it again just for shits and giggles!

A few weeks ago, when I was in Dallas for my cousin Megan’s bridal shower and bachelorette party, we wanted to buy some wine to enjoy on Friday evening. After browsing the wine aisles at her local grocery store we finally decided on two bottles. One was named Little Black Dress, which we chose for its name, and the other, pictured above, was Mission de San Antonio Valero from Fall Creek Vineyards in Texas, which we chose for its label.

Normally, I don’t judge wines by their covers, and I usually purchase based on taste or recommendation, but I guess being in Texas made me feel a little crazy, and I decided to trust my instinct!

The wine was good, but the label was even better!

Why do I love the label you ask?

Well I shall tell you:

First, I love San Antonio because it is beautiful, full of culture, and its where I spent my 4 years during college. I miss it greatly!

Second, it has an image of the Alamo on it and in GOLD no less! The Alamo is only one of the most defining images of Texas!

Third, the Alamo, pictured on the label, has much personal significance to me, besides the fact that it is a part of Texas history. When I was a freshman in college, I got “stuck” in a semester-long class about the Alamo. It was ALL Alamo, ALL the time! At first, I was not enthusiastic about this class, as it had been my last choice. But it grew on me. I learned alot, met some great people in the class (some of my first friends in college), and had the opportunity to learn from one of my favorite professors, Dr. Linda Salvucci. In addition, this class introduced me to genealogy. As out final project, we had to write a 10 page paper on any topic relating to the Alamo. I had a great, great, great (ok lots of “great”s) uncle named Edward F. Mitchusson from Kentucky who was the surgeon at the Alamo and fought and died for Texas’ independence! I got to do research at the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library where I read old letters from my ancestors and I compiled the largest document of facts on my relative. Not only did I get an A in the class, I also learned alot about my heritage, genealogy, research in general, and Texas! I also contributed to documenting my family history!

So now you know why I just HAD to buy the wine when I saw the label!

I promised a recap of my Memorial Day weekend and my cousin’s wedding so here it is:

The weekend can be summed up in one word: SPECTACULAR!

Almost the entire family was able to make it to the wedding. People came from Washington State, Oklahoma, Texas, South Carolina, Virginia, and New Mexico. I’d say we did our best at taking over Sherman, Texas for the weekend!

Besides having a ton of fun, doing alot of reminiscing, and making new memories that will last a lifetime, I think the most important thing that came out of the trip was the realization that I have the best family in the world and I absolutely love them. As children, we were all very close, but I often worry that after all of the years of college, and jobs, and everyone moving farther apart to pursue different careers or life choices, we would slowly drift apart and lose that closeness that we all had.

This trip definitely stifled those worries because even as adults, we all still enjoy each other’s company and realize how important it is to maintain that closeness that many other families are not lucky enough to have.

And in no specific order, here are my favorite moments from the trip:

Marc calling me to tell me that they were running late to pick Ben and I up from the airport and they would be there soon if they didn’t die first from the roach crawling around Megan’s car

Eating REAL Tex-Mex food and drinking margaritas with Megan and Ben on a Thursday afternoon

Watching the Hangover with the fam and repeating quotes like, “Tigers love pepper; they hate cinnamon” and “Toodaloo Motha Fuckas”

Running on the treadmill with my sister in the hotel gym on Friday morning and keeping each other motivated for our half marathon in October

Eating continental breakfast with the whole family in the hotel lobby every morning

Watching the surprise slide show made by Bryan’s (the groom) dad 3 times and loving it more each time

Getting to know some of my cousins as adults since the last time I saw them they were still kids

Dancing with Ben for the first time in our almost-4-year-long relationship

Visiting with friends and family at the rehearsal dinner and the wedding reception

Introducing Ben to the whole fam damily and to Sherman, Texas!

DANCING with the fam (particularly to Footloose – will always remember the suspender tricks)

Giving a speech at the reception to honor my cousin and one of my best friends

Catching the bouquet (even if my mom DID volley it to me)

Meeting many of the little ones who have joined our family but I hadn’t had the opportunity to meet yet and watching them dance and play on the dance floor

Saying “Shelby Drink Your Juice” in a country accent every time Megan started to tear up at the thought of no longer being a Mitchusson to keep her from messing up her make-up

The sigh of relief I had when mom fixed the zipper on my bridesmaid dress and once again confirmed that she is my ultimate hero

Walking down the stairs at the reception with the best man as we were introduced to the guests to the tune of the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling”

Partying at Cellarmans until midnight after the rehearsal dinner and then moving the party to the Holiday Inn Express gazebo until 2 AM the night before the wedding

Getting my hair done with my mom, aunt, the bride, and the bridesmaids

Getting pedicures and manicures with my mom, aunt, sister, and cousin

Laughing the day after the wedding at the stories of dance moves involving the shocker

Seeing Matt’s bee hives

Dancing to “Girl’s Just Want To Have Fun” after “catching” the bouquet

Watching my cousin get married in the same church my parents were married in almost 40 years ago

There are so many more great memories, but if I keep writing, you’d all get bored and stop reading!

And now, courtesy of Marc Mitchusson, a photo of the Scott Family great-grandaughters who attended the wedding and also some of my best friends in the whole world!

My sister signed up for the Team in Training Houston chapter and will be running the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco with me. This makes me so very HAPPY!

Running is one of the hobbies that she and I are both interested in and I am so excited that we will get to share this experience. Plus we will have each other to share fundraising and training tips with. I also kind of like to think of it as a free sisters’ weekend as well. Although it’s not really free since she has to raise $3500 and I’ve got to raise $3900.

I always cry when I have to leave my family (or they have to leave me) after a visit, and I spend the rest of the day depressed and wondering why I live so far away.

When my sister and brother came to visit me a month ago for Easter weekend, I woke up Sunday morning (the day they were leaving) with a heaviness in my heart and a lump in my throat. I had had such a great time and didn’t want them to go even though I knew that they had to. I cried to Ben, “Why do I have to be this way? I wish I could be one of those people who doesn’t get sad about stuff like this!” Ben replied that I didn’t really want that and he comforted me the best that he could.

This past Sunday in Dallas, my cousin Megan began to tear up at the thought of the family leaving at the end of a very fun weekend. Megan and I joke that we are practically the same person because we have so many similar character traits so as soon as I saw her visibly upset about saying goodbye to everyone, I knew it would hit me too. I told her not to cry because she would make me cry and then we’d both be crying, and I was already trying my hardest not to let that happen. Of course I teared up saying goodbye to her while giving her a hug, but looking back I am somewhat glad we are the way that we are. I’m a passionate person and while it hurts at times to care so much, it’s part of what makes me who I am (and Megan who she is). And I like who I am, so without those tears, I’d be a different person, and who knows if I’d like myself.

I guess the point of all this rambling is that I’m proud to be me even though my crazy tendencies drive me nuts sometime!

If you know me well, then you know that every year in January, I spend a long weekend in Las Vegas with several of the most awesome ladies in my life.

The tradition started twenty years ago. My mom was having the most hellish year…her mom died, father-in-law died, the dog died, and the van got stolen. So in January, when the new year started, her best friend, Mrs. C, and favorite aunt, Aunt Platt (aka Mary Fuckin’ Poppins) said after last year, this year cannot get any worse, so let’s go to Vegas to start it off right. And so the tradition began.

When I was a little girl, I used to cry and cry when my mom left us every January for that long weekend. My dad thought I was crying because I missed my mom, but honestly, deep down, I think I was crying cause I knew how much fun they were having without me and I wasn’t old enough to join in!

Well the year I turned 21, that rite of passage awaited me, and I got to go to Vegas for the first time! I haven’t missed a trip yet and this will be my 7th year! It’s pretty much my version of Christmas and it’s the best damn 5 days and 4 nights a woman could ask for. No men allowed…only ladies…and we party our asses off until we are sick!

I’m going back to Vegas tomorrow. I’ll get to see cousins, aunts, good friends, my mom, and my sister and I ABSOLUTELY CAN’T WAIT! So in honor of my Vegas Girls and because it is Vegas Eve (yes, it is a holiday in my book), I wrote this poem!

Twas the night before Vegas, when all through the houses

The ladies were packing and picking out blouses.

Bracelets were hung from their wrists with Sin City charms,

As they decided which Vegas purse to wear on their arms.

The Vegas girls were way too excited for bed,

While Elvis sang Viva Las Vegas in their heads.

Now was no time for sleeping or resting or naps,

All that business could wait until they got back.

Thinking back on all of the past Vegas trips,

They grew more excited to trade money for chips.

Even though they might be digging into their secret stash,

They hoped to return home with a big wad of cash!

They would celebrate with drinks on that long Southwest flight,

Waiting for touchdown, to start that great night.

As the fabulous Las Vegas sign came into view,

The ladies would cheer along with the Southwest crew.

They would enter the Flamingo and finish check-in,

Drop off their luggage, and get ready to win.

Passing Bugsy’ Bar as they’d head to play black jack,

There would stand Elvis with the party pit pack.

“Now Tito! Now, Mireya, now, Claudine and Chip

Come dealers and pit bosses, please hurry quick!

See who’s come to visit us once again this new year,

The Vegas girls are back to take over you hear!”

The trip would be filled with great friends and good fun,

The ladies would sing “Way to go dealer!” at the top of their lungs.

Playing black jack, and craps, and hitting the slots,

They’d take over that casino and play till they drop!

They’d eat cheeseburgers in paradise at Margaritaville,

And catch up and visit as their fruity drinks chill.

Trying to beat the house, they’d stay up till all hours,

While the cocktails waitress kept bringing amaretto sours.

From Texas, Seattle, Virginia, and all over the place,

The girls traveled far and wide with a smile on their face.

They come every year to forget all their worries and cares,

And have a fun time and get away from men, which is rare.

They’d head to the Bellagio champagne brunch as the trip neared its end,

Pretty soon Leslie would be calling dad asking for money to lend.

They’d all say goodbye as they got into cabs,

After paying their bills and closing their tabs.

The Vegas girls saddened that the trip was already over,

Would already be wishing for next year’s trip to come closer.

Back to the real world, they would have to go.

Back to work, responsibilities, and earning the dough.

But don’t fret Vegas girls, because it’s only Vegas Eve,

I shall see you all tomorrow with an ace up my sleeve!

A couple of years ago, my mom moved from our big, ole house in the suburbs to a tiny townhouse in the city. In the move, 3 very valuable objects were misplaced and the family mourned the loss of these beloved items.

Ok, so I’m not talking about the family dog or something worth a large chunk of money. I’m talking about the 3 Christmas stockings that my mom made for my sister, brother, and I as babies. We’ve hung these up every year at Christmas time and when they were misplaced, we were afraid we had lost them forever. My stocking is one of my favorite things in the whole world. As a matter of fact, if my house was burning down, and I could only save one non-living object from being destroyed, it would be a toss-up between my two blankies (My name is Leslie Elsaifi, I’m 27 years old, and YES, I still sleep with blankies) and the Christmas stocking. My stocking is very near and dear to my heart partially because my mother made it for me with her own two hands and partially because it will always have a connection with Christmas memories which is always a very special and happy time for me and my family.

I also love mine because it says “Twas the Night Before Christmas” and I was born on Christmas Eve! So needless to say, we were all jumping for joy when my mom stumbled across them back in November (just in time for Christmas) while looking for her punch bowl!

And without further ado, I present to you, the magnificent stockings made by Patsy Mitchusson:
